Solar Scientists

By oceanguy | June 26, 2007

According to the Financial Post of Canada, those who study the sun have formed a consensus on Global Climate Change, but it’s not what you think. Although it is almost completely unreported in the mainstream media, there is no real consensus developing among scientists. Instead,

Climate-change research is now literally exploding with new findings. Since the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, the field has had more research than in all previous years combined and the discoveries are completely shattering the myths.

Hardly the stuff of consensus building among climatologists and weathermen. However, solar scientists seem to be developing a consensus of their own and their conclusions will bring charges of wing-nuttery from the moonbats. How’s this for an eye-opening statement for the Goracle and his Gorbot minions?

Solar scientists predict that, by 2020, the sun will be starting into its weakest Schwabe solar cycle of the past two centuries, likely leading to unusually cool conditions on Earth. Beginning to plan for adaptation to such a cool period, one which may continue well beyond one 11-year cycle, as did the Little Ice Age, should be a priority for governments. It is global cooling, not warming, that is the major climate threat to the world…

How sweet it will be if Dr. Patterson and the solar scientists are correct and in a mere 13 years all of these Global Warming chicken littles will be backstroking, explaining how they were really right all along.

As an aside, my primary duties when I worked at the Pentagon in the early 90’s involved the research and development of the future of the Global Positioning System (GPS) program. As early as 1991 one of our technical concerns was the coming era of increasing sun-spot activity and the effect it was going to have on the constellation of satellites keeping the system running. At one briefing I attended, probably in 1993, the engineer/scientist conducting the briefing mentioned in passing that the increased solar flare and sunspot activity would probably cause a measurable increase in the earth’s surface temperatures due to all the energy being ejected towards our planet… Again, our concerns were how that was going to affect satellite operations and shelf-life among other things… No one ever made a connection, that I remember, between the predicted increase in solar activity and “global warming cause by greenhouse gases issue.” Maybe I wish they had. The global warming movement was really just in its infancy but it was maturing rapidly.

I wonder… I’d love to read a history of the man-made Global Warming movement. Who were the real voices behind the political movement? Which scientists were the first to marry a scientific study with politics? Were the socialists involved from the beginning? If not, when did they co-opt the issue?

Hat Tip to: Melanie Phillips who has much more to say on the subject. And be sure to bookmark the Financial Post article so you can read the entire series on The Deniers.

For an ironic twist, see this 1998 report, that Soccer Dad sent to me, by “the debate is TOTALLY OVER” folks at the Beeb, where they tell us, “Climate changes such as global warming may be due to changes in the sun rather than to the release of greenhouse gases on Earth.”
