You’re It, I Quit

By oceanguy | June 29, 2007

I’ve been tagged by Gail for the following meme and also by the Bald Headed Geek:

The Rules are: Each player lists 8 facts/habits about themselves. The rules of the game are posted at the beginning before those facts/habits are listed. At the end of the post, the player then tags 8 people and posts their names, then goes to their blogs and leaves them a comment, letting them know that they have been tagged and asking them to read your blog.

So, Here are my Eight personal facts…
Shabbat Shalom

******************************************************

1. When setting the time to cook on a microwave, I never enter whole minutes and I always enter the same digit multiple times. If one minute is demanded I’ll punch in either 55 or 66 seconds. Two minutes? 2:22. I don’t use a microwave very often.

2. I’m a sun worshipper. I love being outside in the bright sun and like having a year round tan. While living in England for 3 years I actually “lost my white spots,” it depressed me. I need sunlight and bright lights to stay happy. I hardly ever sit in the shade… if I have the choice of sitting in the sun, I will always take it.

3. I’ve played golf in 24 different countries but in only 11 different states.

4. I was in fourth grade the first time I shaved. My mother made me shave a face full of fuzz for a family portrait. By the time I was in 7th grade I was shaving every day.

5. I’ve walked away from a car crash and a helicopter crash, either of which could have killed me. I was a passenger in a corvette, the driver fell asleep, we rolled twice coming to rest on the passenger door. Neither of us was hurt except I had a small bump on the head. I was the pilot in a helicopter than lost an engine and we managed to ditch it in the Red Sea with only one minor injury… a lacerated hand on my co-pilot. All 23 of us were back on board the carrier in less than 2 hours from crashing.

6. I love to cook and I’m pretty good at it. Not as good as my mother… who wasn’t as good a cook as her mother… but I’m a better bartender than Mother was.

7. I was a high school jock with scholarship offers for both football and lacrosse. Tearing my ACL freshman year at Annapolis ended my football career and another knee surgery a year later ended my lacrosse career… so then I played Rugby… go figure.

8. I love to sing, though my voice is not what it used to be. I sang in an Up With People group during high school, and with the Glee Club at the Naval Academy during my Plebe Year, until grades and lacrosse commitments kept me from practice and traveling.

Now, about me tagging others. I enjoy being tagged but hate taggin others. I know a couple of times I’ve been tagged I’ve declined either because the meme didn’ t interest me or because there were other things going on and the meme didn’t fit the current mood of the place. I was going to try to tag a few people but it looks like ai waited too long as at least half of those I would tag have already posted, in fact one had tagged me via e-mail that I saw too late.

Anway, I wouldnt tag someone I didn’t read, and I hate rejection so, I rarely tag anyone with any meme. But this time I’ll break my rule, and try tagging a few folks I read that haven’t already been tagged. So here you go:

Linda SoG … and she answers

I remember when Up With People came to my high school. Did your group ever perform in NY?

I was part of Sing Out Syracuse. I did one trip to Long Island for a two show weekend as part of a small group… only 7 or 8 of us joining a bigger group that was part of the National Touring group. There were kids from maybe a half dozen other local groups participating. There were close to 100 of us in the show… I don’t remember the schools we performed at. It would have been in 1970 or ‘71.

I had a solo in a song about Paul Revere… funny I can still remember, complete with the stage motions.
“Ride, ride though the night be cold
Ride , ride til the truth be told
Ride ride like that man of old
    Ride Like Paul Revere…”

Ah, it couldn’t have been your group I saw then - I went to New Rochelle High in Westchester County. I do remember it being a big deal when they came. Lots of lights, sparkly costumes, very professional. Much bigger than the science guy with snakes or school talent show that we saw during most school assemblies.

I don’t know if I’m more impressed by the fact that you survived a helicopter crash or the fact that you flew helicopters…

    Thanks for following up, Oceanguy!

It’s always fun to read this stuff!

Okay. Consider it done (here). Thanks for the linkage.

Gail,: No flashy, sparkly, costumes for us… just funky outfits with bold primary colors… and white pants… ugh. The local Sing Out Groups often supplemented the national touring group for shows. The deal I was on was kind of a side show… the off-broadway version, where a small group from the national group graced us talentless hacks.

Mark: You probably shouldn’t be impressed with either one!

Tammi: My pleasure, thanks for playing along.

BHG: I like reading them too, especially from bloggers that don’t usually write about personal things.

Tim: I’m glad you got the tag, I’ve had trouble leaving comments at your site.

    Augh! Okay Okay.
If you can do it, so can I! But I’m not as fascinating as you are!

I’ll post mine in the morning.

    Thanks. No, really! Thanks!

Two crashes! I was in one crash when I was 17, and that was more than enough for me. Like yours, my crash was dramatic (flipped off a freeway offramp), with the result being a walk-away, something for which I’ve always been grateful. (And there was the fact that I wore a seatbelt.) I can’t boast a helicopter crash, though, and hope that one never becomes part of my story-telling repertoire. Glad, though, that you and your crew walked away unscathed.

As for the shaving in 4th grade — really, truly? I have my doubts there, but I’ll take your word for it!

Mind if I beg off? I did one of these once, and vowed never to do one again. I hate breaking my own promise…to myself!

But thanks for thinking of me!

    Cheers!

Bookworm: Yes, 4th grade. I was in Mrs. Tappan’s class. We were having a family portrait done and my mother thought I was too fuzzy. It was a pretty noticeable case of white peach fuzz, not at all stubbly, but shave I did… and it grew back pretty quickly.

And by the time I was in 7th grade I needed to shave every day. I was 5′10″ 200lbs in 8th grade and shaving… a veritable freak. I’m 5′10″ 215lbs today…. I guess I ought to be proud of only gaining 15 pounds since I was in Junior high school!
